How to reach Lake Como by public transport

Working at the Hotel Posta for these many years definitely made me an expert in answering our guests’ frequent questions. One I get asked almost all the times during the booking phase is: how do I get to Como late by public transport? Therefore I decided to write something to help you find all the information you need to know in order to visit us!

There are so many beautiful places in Italy, but not all of them are easily reachable if you have no access to a car, or if you simply like traveling being rocked by a train, looking outside the window, without having to worry about queues, parking and traffic. This article is dedicated to you, who prefer public transportation for you holiday on Como Lake. Who better than me, born and bred by the Lario’s shores, can recommend you the best way to get here?

As you probably know, the lake splits in two branches at its southern end. At the bottom of the western branch we find Como and at the eastern one Lecco, the two cities about 40 km apart. Como Lake is just 50 km from Milan and only minutes from Switzerland. This makes reaching Como and Lecco by train from Milan really fast and convenient. To get to the Hotel Posta you will have to look for trains going to Como.

This splendid town is reached by more than one train: they all arrive at the station of Como – Porta San Giovanni, both Trenitalia and Trenord trains, leaving from Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi stations. The trip is approximately 30 minutes long on the Milano-Como-Chiasso railway line. From Switzerland you can reach the station of Como – Porta San Giovanni from Zurich ad Lugano taking the Swiss railways SBB’s trains. If you choose Como Lago Station, you will find trains direction Milano Cadorna (1 Hours)

Once you arrive in Como and you’ve taken in the view from the southern end of the lake, you have different options to get to your final destination, Hotel Posta in Moltrasio: the most popular are either by bus or by ferry.

Everywhere else if you want to get somewhere you take a bus, but not on Lario’s shores: I strongly recommend the ferry. By boat is by far the best way of discovering Como Lake, because all the small towns are clinging to the Alps’ first slopes, overlooking the water. The ferry is perfect as public transportation as it is for a daily excursion. The best part? It makes reaching the Hotel Posta very easy, because the pier is right in front of our hotel!

To navigate the lake you can avail yourself of the boats provided by Navigazione Lago di Como. The company also sells daily tickets which allows you to get off and on the ferry at your leisure in every town you decide to visit, perfect for your daily excursion. The bigger cities are also connected by hydrofoil boats, in case you are late for your train departing from Como!

The buses connect Como to all the towns in the province, and further on to Lecco, Bergamo and Varese. There are two companies that operates around Como Lake, ASF Autolinee and FNMAutoservizi.

All these options are perfect if you decide to spend a few days at Como Lake during Milan’s Expo 2015.  Travel by public transport and visit us here at the Hotel Posta in Moltrasio, I am waiting for you with open arms!
