The Villa Melzi D’Eril’s gardens discovery

The Villa Melzi d’Eril’s gardens are a fantastic private residence located in Bellagio. Owned by the Melzi d’Eril family, today Gallarati Scotti, this villa is recognized as an Italian national monument. The structure was built between 1808 and 1810 by Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Duke of Lodi and vice-president of the Italian Republic with Napoleon who commissioned Giocondo Albertolli.

With a typically neoclassical style, Villa Melzi d’Eril was a summer residence that has hosted artists, poets and painters like Albertolli, who painted the interior belts and designed furniture, Andrea Appiani and Giuseppe Bossi (painters), Alessandro Sanquirico (scenographer), Antonio Canova, Giovan Battista Comolli, Pompeo Marchesi (sculptors), Luigi Manfredini (bronze sculptor) and Franz Liszt who, guest of the villa, composed here his “Sonata a Dante”.

The Villa Melzi d’Eril’s gardens: a dip in the past in a unique atmosphere

In addition to the Villa, heart of the complex, (that has private use) the structure includes a family chapel that retains the remains of the Melzi family; the orangery, that nowadays is a museum; the hill-pine forest and the wonderful Villa Melzi d’Eril’s gardens, open to the public, 800 meters overlooking the spectacular Lake Como’s coast, both in Bellagio (known as “the pearl of Lake) and in Loppia.

Walking through the Villa Melzi d’Eril’s English gardens will be a unique experience: they are enriched with sculptures designed by architect Canonica and botanist Villoresi (already creator of Villa Reale di Monza’s garden). They could not miss the ‘classic’ exotic plants that, like the other well-known Villa Carlotta’s garden, at that time was normal to have them into a luxury garden. Between centuries-old trees, camellias, perfectly groomed hedges, azaleas, giant rhododendrons, boat memories, you will really feel like living in another historical period.

It’s very simple: right in front of our Hotel you will find the boat of the Lake Como Navigation company that will take you to discover the Lake. You can decide to go directly to Bellagio or to stop for an intermediate stop also in Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina.
Arrived in Bellagio, look for directions: you have to take a small walk, but you must do it! ;)
