Antiquarium in Ossuccio: from pilgrim shelter to museum
Today we will visit together the “Antiquarian” in Ossuccio, a place that is part of the Hospitalis complex that was dedicated to the poor pilgrims hospitality.
The first news about “Hospitalis” and then of the Ossuccio Antiquarium date back to 1169: in fact, some documents cite the Santa Maria Maddalena church with its hospital, also famous for its bell tower that stands out and is visible to all tourists traveling on the Queen Road (statale Regina) which runs alongside the Lake Como. Other documents show that in 1898 a Hospitalis portion was occupied by the city, the other part was used as residences and stables. The property, that was of the Giovio family (historical Como’s family), after the death of the last descendant in 1907it passed to the “Charity Jovius” and in 1959 were settled the Sisters Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament.
The Antiquarium in Ossuccio is the ideal starting point to visit the Comacina Island and an art venue
The restoration that has brought the Ossuccio’s Antiquarium as we can see today, has preserved both the traces of the original structure as the presence of extemporaneous decorative intent. Today the Ossuccio’s Antiquarium is a valuable structure that tells the past, but it is available to the community for cultural intentions and exhibitions. The possibility to visit the nearby Island Comacina with its archaeological findings certainly gives a perfect mix to spend an interesting afternoon full of art and history.
