The island both during the Roman & medieval times was a privileged and strategic location for military, political and religious aims. On the island occurred historical facts related to the “Magistri Comacini” (builders and artists who came together in a traveling corporation between Canton Ticino, Como and Lombardy) and Frederick Barbarossa (who is still remembered in September during in the famous Palio). Today it is privately owned, but it is still open to visitors as well as the archeological site and the small Church of St. Giovanni.
